Well, if you haven’t yet heard about the Sharp FX Plus, then you must not be the type to troll the halls of your local Walmart. This Android Smartphone is available for sale on Walmart from a few weeks. And a PCD rep just confirmed it’ll soon be available outside Walmart’s massive aisles, hitting select AT&T stores by the end of the month.
So I got some time to spend with this Android Smartphone on my nearest Walmart Store and I took a closer look at its “Good” and “Bad” sides in that time. What I experienced while running my hands on this device, I am explaining in this review. So please, check it out:
Hardware:
Looks wise, its an all black android smartphone and it actually seems like a toned-down version of the original Sharp FX. The handset is 4.7 inches tall by 2.4 inches wide by 0.6-inch thick. Only the center portion of the screen slides out, which leaves grippable “ears” above and below the display. Its a nice phone to hold in both, horizontal and vertical directions. But its a little bit heavy in weight (5.3 ounces).
Sharp FX Plus has a 3.2-inch HVGA TFT touch screen with 480×320-pixel resolution and support for 262,000 colors. Its virtual keyboard comes in two flavors. An Android keyboard by default or Swype (switch over by pressing and holding in any text field, then selecting “input method.”)
Below the display, there are four narrow buttons for the Menu, Home, Back, and Search functions. The power button and camera trigger are on the right spine; on the left is the volume rocker and the Micro-USB charging port. It supports 3.5 mm headset jack and sports a 3 mega-pixel camera lens on its back.
Under the back cover, there’s a Micro SD Card Slot. It comes with a 2GB card pre-installed and the expandable memory is up to 32 GB.
When you slide up the screen then you’ll find a recessed four-row QWERTY keyboard with rounded and slightly raised keys. The keyboard is quite compact and it makes reaching the keys easier than ever. But the individual buttons are a little flat, and it slows us down a tad while composing longer texts and e-mails. Sensible placement of some oft-used punctuation keys, like the dedicated comma and period buttons on either side of the space bar is appreciated.
Software:
Sharp FX Plus runs Android 2.2 Gingerbread OS and comes with seven customizable home screens. It mostly uses the stock Android look. There’s a stylized, static toolbar at the bottom of the screen, which contains icons for the phone book, messaging, the WebKit browser, and the application tray.
As we know, running Android has its own advantages. And the biggest advantage between them is this that Android Smartphones come pre-loaded with so many apps. Sharp FX Plus also does the same. It has plenty of useful Google apps pre-loaded like many other Android Smartphone including maps, voice navigation, Places, Google Talk, Calendar, YouTube, and Gmail.
There’s also voice search, and essential apps like a clock, an alarm, a sound recorder, voice commands, and a calculator. The default music player is with its simple, straightforward controls to play, pause, skip, sort songs, create playlists, and access an equalizer.
There are also some additions in the apps of device like like AT&T Code Scanner, AT&T FamilyMap, AT&T Navigator, Facebook, Twitter, Live TV, Yellow Pages Mobile, and Polaris Office.
Wrap-Up:
Finally we can say that Sharp FX Plus is a nice budget android smartphone; but is not packed with any new and interesting features. It only sports the normal features of an Android Smartphone and a normal camera. When it comes to pros and cons, we can say that its pros are decent keyboard, good call quality, and 2GB external memory preloaded while its cons are Battery life, 600 MHz processor and tad flat keys. So overall a good option for low-budget customers but not a good one who don’t care to spend on features.
