LG Thrill 4G: A Review

After a few weeks of launching of LG Optimus 3D in European Market, we’re ready to give its American counterpart its fair share of warmth. The device is better known as LG Thrill 4G in American states. This AT&T device is the latest one that’s going on the HTC Evo 3D’s footsteps, but after adding some more features in the store.

AT&T LG Thrill 4G

Few people want to spend their hard-earned money at a gimmick, but two rear cameras and some fancy special effects are just enough to change a person’s judgement of the device in a split-second. Lets take a look at the features and specs of this device the review given below:

Hardware and Software:

The device is most similar to the LG Optimus 3D launched in European Market. By watching it from outside, you’ll find the only difference of an AT&T logo printed on the back. It weighs around 5.93 ounces (168g), and its dimensions size up at 5.07 x 2.68 x 0.47 inches (128.8 x 68 x 11.9mm). Offers the same screen size similar to Optimus 3d – 4.3-inch and an 800 x 480 display, indistinguishable hardware buttons and ports, identical camera placement…etc., etc. The list goes on very long.

LG Thrill 4G Hardware and Software

The internal parts are also similar to Optimus 3D as well. Both of them run off the same 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4430 CPU, 512MB of RAM, a 1,500mAh battery, a pair of 5MP rear cameras for 3D capture (with 1.3MP front-facing).

From the software side, it runs Android 2.2 Froyo. As for the distinct qualities this Froyo-based phone may possess apart from the Optimus 3D, there are just a few things that we can see. There’s the usual suite of AT&T services apply, as well as Kindle, YPmobile, Polaris Office, Qik Lite and Let’s Golf 2 (we have a suspicion that nobody has actually played the first game in the series).

3D

Actually, from this side its a gimmick. Naturally, the LG Thrill 4G and HTC EVO3D both are destined to lock horns with each other. So who is the winner in this race? I took a look at both of these handsets to give you a clear description about who is the conqueror and what are the different features they offer.

3D Experience with Thrill 4G

Both these devices offer many different features in this category. The EVO offers a two-stage shutter button and a hardware toggle that allows you to easily switch between 2D and 3D modes whenever you feel the need to get another angle.

On the other hand, Thrill 4G has something that looks an awful lot like a shutter button — complete with “3D” inscribed in plain sight. But the main point is that  it carries the burden of two separate roles, neither of which involve taking the picture. In the camera application, this button works as a toggle button for 2D and 3D mode. While outside of the camera, it takes you to a 3D menu screen that offers your various three-dimensional apps in the form of a Sense 3.0-esque carousel.

Viewing 3D images and videos on both of these devices may be a completely different experience for each device. I can not easily judge that which one was better. Shots taken with the EVO 3D had a much more realistic appearance that make it appear as though the image really is popping out of the screen. On the other hand, Thrill 4G offers a wider angle and more variable distance by which you can achieve the 3D effect, but it takes a more “layered” approach; instead of the image sticking out of the screen.

Both these devices shoot 3D videos at a 720p resolution and a speed of 30fps. By comparing the two vids side-by-side, I found that the EVO 3D produced a slightly better video and also had a better audio experience. Unfortunately, I didn’t get anything admirable in Thrill 4G’s video recording. It couldn’t record a smoother video as compared to EVO3D.

2D

At this point, once again EVO rules the Thrill. The 2D images taken by Thrill were just normal iin compare to EVO. Thrill takes satisfactory photos in 2D, but there’s one exception–the automatic exposure appeared to have difficulty making adjustments in direct sunlight, causing several washed-out photos in an inconsistent manner.

LG Optimus 3D Camera

The camera has the normal settings you’d come to expect in a feature-packed phone. Delivers you  the typical suite of scene modes, white balance effects and focus options for macro, continuous focus and face tracking, and even offers custom exposure settings to help improve those paltry noonday shots. Also offers the touch-to-autofocus feature but its only available for 2D mode.

Performance:

This is a plus side of Thrill 4G. Its a powerhouse in the field of performance. Its 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4430 CPU and 512MB of dual-channel RAM processor gives such a performance (actually, the superb performance) that I never had any issues with the system lagging or delaying as a result of our multitasking, which involves emails, Twitter, using the browser with Flash, playing games and so on. The phone was quite responsive with my each touch.

In the field of performance, it beats the EVO 3d at each point. You can see all these points in the table given below:

Benchmark Thrill 4G EVO 3D
Quadrant (higher is better) 2,415 2,134
Linpack (higher is better) 43.12 45.79
Nenamark (higher is better) 58.0 42.0
Neocore (higher is better) 57.9 59.2
Sunspider (lower is better) 3,961 5,655

You can see in the above table that it rocks from the side of performance. Its performance is such a thing that if you leave all the camera defects and concentrate on performance, then you’ll feel that you’ve got the real value in your hands.

When it comes to battery life, you’ll be unimpressed. Though it has a superb performance, but still you can not enjoy it for a long time. In my video rundown test, it just stayed up to four hours. And with moderate usage, you can not handle it more than ten hours.

And Finally:

Finally you can say that there are not many difference between Optimus 3d and Thrill 4G. Its pros are its Great performance, Decent 3D imagery and a Bright and beautiful display while cons are Subpar battery life, Choppy video capturing and of course, Froyo.
